Road Safety Week reminds us every year to look at our actions on the road and work together to make sure that roads are the safest they can be for everyone.

As a 3PL with an expanding Transport sector, our responsibility is to ensure our drivers are safe, educated, and aware of the actions they can take to ensure both their own and other road users’ safety. We hosted plenty of activities, including a head-to-head competition using an interactive stopping distance calculator for the drivers to get involved in.

As part of this year’s Road Safety Week’s ‘Fleet Friday,’ our Compliance team put together a series of impactful activities aimed at enhancing awareness and promoting safe driving practices. Our Health and Safety Manager, Nigel Howarth, paired with Mike Sheen, one of Kammac’s most experienced and dedicated drivers, has been at the forefront of this planning. Mike Sheen has sat in the driver’s seat and has been able to give real advice based of years of invaluable experience.

Adding an interactive element to the day, drivers engaged in a stopping distance calculator competition. The competition not only tested their knowledge but also instilled a sense of healthy competition, with a prize for the driver with the least difference in stopping distances.

With resources from Brake Charity, posters were put up around our Transport office highlighting the dangers of speed, the shocking statistics of road fatalities, and the risks of distractions, such as mobile phones. The day involved critical conversations among the drivers and refreshed everyone’s knowledge on road safety.

As part of ‘Fleet Friday’, our drivers had a Toolbox Talk on this year’s Road Safety Week theme: speed, with the associated risks it poses to both drivers and pedestrians. Shedding light on the consequences of distractions, particularly the use of mobile phones while driving, and emphasising the importance of undivided attention on the road. Addressing the diverse risks encountered on the road, from adverse weather conditions to challenging terrains, and strategising ways to navigate them safely.

Thanks to the incredible resources provided by Brake Charity, we were able to share vital videos, including stories of victims affected by road accidents and their families, aiming to emphasise the importance of safe driving practices.

“We have all made mistakes, it’s about learning from your mistakes to make sure we never make the same mistakes again.”

The core of Kammac’s approach to road safety lies in promoting open and honest dialogues with our drivers. The objective isn’t just to spread information but to create a genuine culture of health and safety. By encouraging active participation and discussion, Kammac aims to create an environment where drivers feel empowered and responsible for their actions on the road.

In reflecting on the success of our Road Safety Week – ‘Fleet Friday’ activities, it’s evident that Kammac’s drivers have embraced not just a responsibility but a commitment to ensuring safety on the roads. Their active involvement and enthusiastic participation in the various aspects underscore the effectiveness of our approach to creating a culture of safety.

As we build on our education and awareness during this Road Safety Week, we recognise that this is not just a one-time effort but a continuous journey.
